The Presence of Trees

by Michael S. Glaser

I have always felt the living presence
of trees

the forest that calls to me as deeply
as I breathe,

as though the woods were marrow of my bone
as though

I myself were tree, a breathing, reaching
arc of the larger canopy

beside a brook bubbling to foam
like the one

deep in these woods,
that calls

that whispers home

Just finished Room by Emma Donaghue for book club!  There was a lot of hype around this book and I was actually the one to recommend it for us to read, and I will say that it actually stood up to my expectations!  It was very well written (from the point of view of a five year old child) and it was a perfect balance between being realistic but not making you feel hopeless and depressed.  I think this type of story is almost morbidly fascinating- looking into the psyche of someone who has been held captive their enitre life…crazy to think about.  And it mirrored current events perfectly as we read it just after the Jaycee Dugard story came to the surface in the media.
The whole role of the media was actually really interesting in the book…everyone should read it.  Especially in a book club atmosphere…definitely a book you want to chat about with friends.

Red Hot

A few weeks ago I purchased a groupon for 10 classes at Red Hot Yoga studio.  Three other friends purchased one as well and we were all really excited to amp up our yoga experience to the hot yoga level.  So yesterday, after giving A’s dog a bath (see yesterday’s post), I got into my little yoga outfit and went to my first class.  We walked into the 108 degree room (literally 108…apparently good for extra stretch and a higher heart rate) and I felt like I had walked into a wet blanket.  It was humid and hot- exactly like a sauna.  About 10 minutes in to the 90 minute class I had to stop because I was literally about to vomit on the floor.  So I left the room to lay down in the slightly less hot locker room for a few minutes.  As soon as I regained my strength, I went back into the class only to spend most of the time sitting on the floor and doing the easy poses.  It was INSANE seeing how the people in the class were so good and impervious to heat and pain.  We talked in the car on the way home about how this type of yoga is so much more mental than normal…nausea is actually very controllable I guess if you think yourself out of it.  Needless to say, had I not already bought the 10 classes I would never go back…but I gots to get mah monies worth…so we shall see how far I can push my angry body in the weeks ahead!  One thing that was nice is that my skin feels really clean because I sweat so much… We shall see if I improve.

On House Sitting…

My fiancé (henceforth referred to as “A”) is on vacation with his entire family in Boston this week – a nice little break before school starts back.  He lives with his sister and brother-in-law in a big old house about 2 miles away from my house- so it is always fun family time- and they have an adorable dog who we will call Fluffer for the sake of keeping her true identity private.  Generally when they go on vacation I house and dog sit for them- usually really fun but sometimes disastrous…like last Christmas…but that is another story for another time.

So.  Yesterday morning I went over to the house to let Fluffer out and feed her and play a bit before work.  I made myself a little cup of coffee and sat on the porch while Fluffer played in the front yard and got some energy out.  Then it was time to go to work so put her inside, locked up and was on my way.  Around 4:30 I left work and returned to the house, all geared up to take the pup on a nice ling walk and then read my book for book club… but it never works out so easily, does it?  As soon as I walked in the house I noticed something was awry.  It smelled like vomit and fish and it was about 90 degrees in the house (they had turned off the ac to save power).  So I went about inspecting the house.  The first thing I noticed was a rug in A’s bathroom torn to tiny shreds.  Then I followed my nose into A’s bedroom to find a huge pile of doggie vomit all over A’s school books and binders…and shoes…and carpet.  So I called A and left a message about the unfortunate incident and then got to cleaning.  As I went upstairs to get some supplies, I noticed some Fluffer paw prints at the top of the stairs…then I followed them into the kitchen to find a big pile of poop.  Then I followed them from that pile to another puddle in the living room…

It was at this point I realized that the puddle in A’s room and the puddle in the living room was, in fact, not vomit, but doggie diarrhea.  At this point I just accepted the fact that I was going to be cleaning all night, so I set to work.  It wasn’t 10 minutes before I stood up from cleaning the floor and saw a giant poop explosion on the Pottery Barn sofa in the living room.  The beautiful mint green sofa looked like it had been paint balled with diarrhea.

I got some towels and oxyclean and went to work.  I decided to go back down to A’s room while the Oxyclean (miracle worker) settled into the poop stain and it was then that I found the poop puddle in A’s bed and all over the curtains.  The white curtains.  And yes, you read that correctly…Fluffer had diarrhea IN my fiancé’s bed.

A few loads of laundry and an entire swiffer mop pack later, I was showering the residual poop off of my arms and legs.

Today I am going to give Fluffer a nice long bath…her whole body is covered in her own poop…so that is the post-work project for today.  House sitting….

A little sneaky peek at my new office decor…

it has been a hot minute…

since I have posted on here.  But fear not!  I am still around.  And I am engaged to my man.  And I have a new job.  So there is definately more fodder for blogging.

On engagement:  It is the best.  My mom asked me a few months ago (when she knew A was going to propose but before she spilled the beans to me) if I thought he was the one and how I knew.  I thought about it and decided that this is the fist time in my life where I have no fears or worries whatsoever about a relationship.  And commitment makes me excited, not nauseated.  So there you have it- the most romantic thing ever! haha.  But seriously- he is the best and this year is going to be completely insane and fun planning a wedding.

On my new job: I LOVE it- I am doing community relations at the same shelter where I just finished up my year of americorps and I have loved the transition (including my new office) and I love the day to day.  And how I can sneakily blog at 10am…

So there are the basics.  Photos and book reviews to come…and I promise not to make this into a wedding blog, although an occasional update or picture might slip in…
